Description

Polyptyque is more than the title of a single work in this program. The term also describes the form of the evening itself: a musical polyptych made up of several panels that show different manifestations of polyphony, counterpoint, and the relationship between solo voice and ensemble. It begins with Johann Sebastian Bach's Third Brandenburg Concerto. Here, the energy arises entirely from the interplay of the strings. Voices interlock, lines cross, rhythmic impulses travel through the ensemble and come together again in the tutti. Bach shows how much movement and tension can arise from pure polyphony. Frank Martin's Polyptyque takes this idea into another sphere. The work refers to the Passion of Christ and unfolds like a series of musical images. The solo violin goes through changing roles and perspectives. Sometimes it steps forward, sometimes it blends in, sometimes it seems to embody a figure, sometimes an inner emotion. Thus, the work itself becomes a polyptych: a sequence of individual fields that only unfold their full meaning in context. With the world premiere of a new commissioned composition by the internationally celebrated Swiss composer Richard Dubugnon, another voice is added. The work is created on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Camerata Zürich. In this context, the premiere is not isolated in the program but serves as a contemporary contribution to a concert that deals with structure, polyphony, and sonic perspective. The evening concludes with Bach's Harpsichord Concerto in D minor BWV 1052 with the Swiss harpsichordist Vital Julian Frey. Here, the contrast between solo instrument and tutti is clearly outlined once again. The harpsichord gives impulses, the ensemble responds, supports, contradicts, and drives forward. J. S.
