«Pollicino»

Description

The children's opera «Pollicino» («Däumling») is based on the fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm: Because he can no longer give them anything to eat, a father abandons his seven children in the forest to let them starve there. Despite the support of the animals in the forest, the children end up in the house of a cannibal, from which they manage to escape along with his seven daughters. During their escape through the wilderness, they learn the importance of solidarity and love.
Hans Werner Henze wrote this children's opera in 1979/80 for his festival in Montepulciano. It is a stage piece for children and adults – both performers and audience. The orchestra school adopts an artistically holistic approach in cross-disciplinary projects: children can choose their role – whether on or behind the stage.
