Karl Schmid on his design in the Gutschick school building. This evening, we want to explore why figurative creation is essential for the comprehensive development of personality. Using the work of Karl Schmid as an example, we examine the importance of form-color experience for holistic education. In his teaching at the School of Arts and Crafts (1941–1971), in collaboration with Hans Arp, and in his extensive work, Karl Schmid placed great emphasis on a playful approach, as he said: «Beyond aesthetic experience, all artistic works aim to demonstrate the importance of mental play. Play as a way of life, play as human self-fulfillment. Play and play opportunities, the optical and the extra-optical, the rational and the irrational, the useful and the useless must be the great forces and sources of experience of a school.»
