Karl Schmid on his design for the school building This evening, we will explore why visual design is indispensable for the comprehensive development of the personality. Using the work of Karl Schmid as an example, we will examine the significance of the experience of form and color for a holistic education. In his teaching at the School of Applied Arts (1941–1971), in his collaboration with Hans Arp, and in his extensive body of work, Karl Schmid placed great emphasis on a playful approach. As he said: “Beyond the aesthetic experience, all artistic work seeks to demonstrate the significance of intellectual play. Play as the fulfillment of life, play as human self-realization. Play and the possibilities of play, the visual and the non-visual, the rational and the irrational, the useful and the useless must be the great forces and sources of experience in a school.”
