Regarded by international critics for his universality as a Renaissance man, awarded honorary titles and prestigious prizes, especially for his humanitarian engagement. As a supporter of young singing talents, Domingo founded the Operalia singing competition. Furthermore, he is a global ambassador of Spanish culture and Zarzuela, following the example of his parents.
Plácido Domingo is extraordinarily versatile and has also served as artistic director and general director of the opera houses in Washington and Los Angeles in addition to his career as a singer and conductor. His concerts with tenor colleagues José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti as "The Three Tenors" are legendary. Besides his extensive repertoire as an opera performer, Domingo is also a pioneer of crossover and has won 12 Grammys. He played leading roles in Zeffirelli's (Cavalleria Rusticana, La Traviata, and Otello), Rosi's (Carmen), and De Bosio's (Tosca) opera films. Besides singing, he is a respected conductor with more than 600 performances worldwide. Since 2009, he has also been singing major baritone roles.

Plácido Domingo is now performing a splendid gala concert at Stadtcasino Basel. During this concert, Plácido Domingo will sing the great arias from his repertoire, especially those by Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. But an opera gala also particularly thrives on duets with a soprano. Therefore, Plácido Domingo will invite a world-renowned soprano.
The gala program will also be complemented with popular arias and duets from Spanish "Zarzuela." Zarzuela is a distinct genre of Spanish operetta, very comparable to the operettas of Johann Strauss and Franz Léhar, whose great successes "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" and "Lippen schweigen" are also part of the program.
