The 22nd of November is their day: For centuries, Saint Cecilia, patroness of church music, has been celebrated on this date – once with the most elaborate festive music. Exactly on November 22nd, Georg Friedrich Händel’s ode "Alexander’s Feast" rings out, a work with which he splendidly opened his London oratorio season in 1736. It was based on John Dryden’s poetry about Alexander the Great – an impressive plea for the power of music. Händel unfolds a panorama of affect-laden arias, festive choirs, and vividly artistic polyphony. In the end, Saint Cecilia elevates the ancient event and raises music to divine power. Closely linked to the premiere is the "Harp Concerto in B-flat major, op. 4 No. 6 (HWV 294)", which Händel integrated into the work. As a sounding symbol of the lyre of the singer Timotheus, it virtuously emphasizes the central theme: music moves, seduces, transforms.
Once again, the Philharmonic Choir Friedrichshafen has invited magnificent guests. Together with the Birnauer Kantorei, the Baroque Orchestra L’arpa festante, and a promising soloist ensemble, the choir will surely prove once more the radiance that characterizes their annual concert.
