Description
Peers in Psychiatry - Because Experience Counts Peers are people with personal experience of mental crises or illnesses who, after appropriate training, support and accompany other affected individuals at eye level. They know mental crises not only from textbooks but from their own lives. They understand how despair, helplessness, stigma, or a stay in psychiatry can feel — but also that recovery is possible and new perspectives can emerge. The event "Peers in Psychiatry - Because Experience Counts" showcases the diverse facets of peer work and asks what contribution people with personal crisis or family experience can make today in psychiatric care. Affected peers and a family peer share their personal experiences. A man with his own psychiatric experience describes what support from a peer can achieve. A medical director and a nursing director highlight the importance of peer work from the perspective of their roles and respective professional organizations. A nursing scientist provides an overview of scientific findings and shows what research says about the effectiveness, opportunities, and limits of peer work. The concluding panel discussion brings the perspectives together and addresses questions such as: What is needed for collaboration at eye level? How can peer work be sustainably anchored in psychiatry? And how can the experiences of affected individuals and relatives become a valuable resource for the further development of psychiatric care? Musical interludes create space between the various contributions and round off the program. Afterwards, a reception invites personal exchange and networking.
