Description
.. the Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter, actress, author, and humorist Erika (Sandra Hüller), undertake a journey through a ruined Germany – from Frankfurt, in the American occupation zone, to Weimar, under Soviet control. On the occasion of Goethe's centenary, on both sides of the inter-German border, it is hoped to hear words of comfort, approval, and forgiveness from the greatest storyteller of all. Between euphoric Wagner heirs and generals versed in literature, Germany's most important writer is courted and sometimes insulted, while the drama of his own family quietly intensifies. It is the first time since the war that Thomas Mann returns to his homeland, which he had once fled to exile. A journey into the wounded German soul, which must heal – it will become for Erika and the “magician,” as his children often called Thomas Mann, a journey into the depths of oneself.
