Suddenly, a sound body emerges from seven musicians that expands, condenses, and contracts again – as if the music itself were breathing. This is exactly where the fascinating world of Patricia Brennan begins. The vibraphonist, originally from Mexico and now living in New York, is one of the most exciting personalities in international jazz. With her septet Breaking Stretch, she explores the boundaries of what an ensemble can be. Each instrument takes on a new role, each voice assumes responsibility for rhythm, movement, and timbre. Nothing merely accompanies – everyone shapes, drives, contradicts, reacts, and surprises. Brennan is not interested in musical effects. She searches for the core of an idea. The title Breaking Stretch describes exactly this idea. Breaking stands for exploring technical and sonic limits, Stretch for expanding and contracting musical spaces – similar to a mathematical function that changes shapes without losing their identity. Patricia Brennan talks about wanting to shape music simultaneously "miles wide and mine deep." Her inspiration comes as much from the Afro-Caribbean music of her homeland as from the legendary salsa orchestras of the Fania All-Stars, Cuban Danzón ensembles, or the great horn sections of Earth, Wind & Fire, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Chicago. What all these bands have in common is that every voice shapes the rhythm. Brennan transfers exactly this principle into her highly modern sound language. The liveliness of this music is also due to the extraordinary lineup. Trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, who the audience at Musig im Pflegidach has already experienced, stands on stage. His virtuosic playing combines technical brilliance with unbridled experimental joy. Dan Weiss is also no stranger in Muri. The drummer has been one of the most influential rhythm players in the New York scene for years and has already been a guest at Pflegidach with Rudresh Mahanthappa, Miguel Zenón, and Ben Monder. His unique combination of jazz, Indian rhythm, and contemporary improvisation makes him one of the most fascinating drummers of our time. Jon Irabagon, Mark Shim, Kim Cass, and Mauricio Herrera complete the ensemble with other exceptional musicians, focusing not on soloists and accompaniment but on the constant interplay of all involved.
