Description

In no previously performed opera composition does the supernatural, mythical appear with such power and primal force as in Richard Wagner's «Der fliegende Holländer», premiered in 1843 at the Royal Court Theatre in Dresden. Wagner depicts his protagonist as a despairing figure, whose former vigor has turned into the opposite – pure destructive will. Rich instrumentation, rapidly changing tempos, daring harmonic turns, and glaring chromaticism characterize the explosive sharpness of the cursed Dutchman doomed to eternal wandering, while scenes with sailor Daland, his daughter Senta, and the hunter Erik, who hopes for a future with Senta, are distinguished by an unusual richness of melody. When Senta stands before her father's pale guest, she recognizes him immediately: as a child, she studied the painting at home in the living room, hearing the legend of the Dutch captain's fate from her nurse Mary. Their encounter not only brings two musical levels together but also merges two realities.
