Description

Migration and tourism have been closely intertwined for over 150 years. With early Alpine tourism, a new economic and living space emerged between Graubünden, Vorarlberg, and southern Tyrol. It is driven by people who leave their homeland for a season or forever to explore new work fields on construction sites, in hotels, or in self-employed professions.
The exhibition focuses on their life stories. In six dedicated houses, they tell their stories: a construction worker from Nonstal who starts a construction company in Vorarlberg; a sous-chef from Siena who works his way up to head chef in twenty hotels across Europe; a waitress from the Canton of Zurich who documents her experiences in a small book; a Jewish photographer from Hungary who opens a studio in Meran; a young ski pioneer who leads the first ski course at Arlberg; and a bathing couple from Meran who are denied the summer season in Engadin due to the First World War. They tell of departure and arrival, of sacrifices and opportunities between St. Moritz, Lech, and Meran. Their life paths show how cross-border mobility shaped, interconnected, and modernized the Alpine region.
