Conductor: Jonathan Darlington Perhaps they are the most profound, moving, and artistic work of Richard Strauss: The Metamorphoses for 23 solo strings - a music of mourning and lament, of pain and suffering, composed under the impression of Germany in ruins, rubble, and ashes in the 'Zero Hour' of 1945. Strauss's Metamorphoses are richly linked with Liszt's paraphrase of the Gregorian melody of the Dies-Irae sequence from the Requiem. That 'Day of Wrath' is conjured with a truly diabolical 'Danse macabre' for piano and orchestra, soundfully powerful and mesmerizingly virtuosic. The Chinese-American star pianist Ying Li takes to the keys. After Totentanz and funeral music, the first of Johannes Brahms's two serenades provides a 'happy' conclusion, in which the German late Romanticist 'unbuttons' himself and shows his best mood.
