Nouvelle Vague

Description

"The ideas were unconventional and the circumstances during filming were sometimes adventurous! In 1960, cinema revolutionary Jean-Luc Godard turned conventions on their head with his debut À bout de souffle – and made film history. In Nouvelle Vague, Linklater retraces this origin story, wandering back to the late 1950s to the beginnings of the film movement of the same name. He makes his black-and-white feature look like a work from that era and sprinkles in countless references and names of famous directing greats." (Sascha Rettig, Viennale, Oct 2025) "106 minutes of pure cinephile bliss. This could summarize the film. Richard Linklater crafts a fountain of departure, nonchalance, and the not-so-young drive between carefreeness and ambition, arrogance and friendship from reality, film history, enthusiasm, legend, and counter-legend. Not only does Jean-Luc Godard, played by Guillaume Marbeck in this film, carry the arrogance of the salon revolutionary like a black-and-white tricolor, but the rest of the young cast, chosen for their almost frightening resemblance to the originals, also exudes charm and cheekiness."
