NMBE Bookworms read «The Gift» by Gaea Schoeters

Description

In the second half of 2026, we will read the book «The Gift» by the Belgian author Gaea Schoeters (Zsolnay Verlag, 2025). In it, our northern neighbor receives a «big» gift: the President of Botswana sends 20,000 elephants to Germany after the German government decided on an import ban on hunting trophies, thereby depriving the poor regions of Botswana of their livelihood. How would Bern handle such a gift, what are the biggest challenges for large mammals of our time, and what are the current challenges of species protection? We will discuss this at the club meeting with the director of the Bern Zoo, Friederike von Houwald.
