Nikolaus Concert of the Mannheim Wind Philharmonic 2026 - Swinging Santa Claus (MBP feat. Janice Dixon)

Description

Great American wind music and Christmas swing: At their Nikolaus concert, the Mannheim Wind Philharmonic presents an American program with a symphonic first part and a swinging second part full of Christmas classics. The focus of the first concert part is the 4th Symphony by David Maslanka – one of the most significant and widely performed works for symphonic wind orchestra worldwide. Maslanka described the music as originating from the spontaneous impulse to loudly proclaim joy of life. Inspired by an overwhelming natural experience, he lets monumental orchestral tutti follow intimate choral melodies, virtuosic chamber music passages, and moments of great calm. The symphony develops an extraordinary emotional and symphonic intensity. For musicians and audiences, this work is an exhilarating experience! In the second concert part, musical joy of life is shown from a completely different perspective. With the native New Yorker and elected Mannheim resident Janice Dixon as a guest soloist, who is equally at home on the grand classical concert stages, in jazz, and with big bands. She has sung with the New York Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, and has performed on many significant opera stages in Germany (including NTM) and worldwide. Together with the Mannheim Wind Philharmonic, the soprano interprets American Christmas classics such as "The Christmas Song," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," as well as other swing and jazz standards. Thus, the Nikolaus concert on the second Advent weekend becomes a festive musical kickoff to the Christmas season – from great American symphonic music to festive Christmas swing.
