Founded in 2001 by Nigel Short, the Tenebrae Choir is one of the world's top vocal ensembles. It is celebrated for its exceptional precision and highly emotional interpretations. This program focuses on the monumental Lamentations I & II by Thomas Tallis.

These settings of Jeremiah's Lamentations are among the most poignant testimonies in music history. With their dense, dark harmonies, they capture the deep sadness and hopelessness of the destruction of Jerusalem - music whose timeless beauty radiates far beyond its original liturgical context. They are complemented by Tallis' hopeful motets such as the intimate "If ye love me", which impresses with its clear text comprehensibility and simple elegance.

The two settings of "In manus tuas" ("Into your hands") by John Sheppard form the spiritual cornerstones of the evening. These settings for evening prayer symbolize letting go and trust in the hour of darkness. The evening concludes with William Blitheman's "In pace in idipsum" ("In peace I fall asleep"), a work of perfect tranquillity that releases the listener into the peace of the night.
