New Light on Beethoven's Pastorale

The "Locus amoenus" – the pleasant place – describes an idyll that has inspired music, images, and writing since antiquity. This fascination with a place in nature, the Garden of Eden on Earth, so to speak, forms the foundation of the "pastoral" aesthetic as we know it today. Idyll, natural paradise, Garden of Eden: these are all terms that might be somewhat close to kitsch and clichés. However, Beethoven's "Pastorale" is far from kitsch. With the terrifying thunderstorm, it also moved away from the initially mentioned "Locus amoenus".

So how did it come about that Beethoven wrote such a symphony? What is there still to discover and hear anew in such a well-known symphony? Chief conductor Roberto González-Monjas will guide you through Beethoven's pastoral depiction with his moderation and musical examples and bring you closer to his personal approach to this masterpiece. In the second half, Beethoven's sixth symphony will sound completely new against this background – in a new light, indeed.
