New Paths to Jonas Breitenstein

Until about 15 years ago, the poet-parson Jonas Breitenstein (1828–1877), a pioneer of Baselbieter dialect literature, was largely forgotten. Since then, his estate stored in the DISTL has been explored, and a four-volume edition of his works has been published. Additionally, two quarterly issues of the ‹Baselbieter Heimatblätter› on aspects of Breitenstein's work and a collection of letters from his travels in Germany (1851/52) have recently appeared. In view of his 150th death anniversary in 2027 and his 200th birthday in 2028, this kickoff event seeks new insights from the latest publications. Participants include theologian Simone Gysin, sociologist Lukas Ott, historian Martin Stohler, and cultural scientist Dominik Wunderlin.
