A group of Togolese women gained great fame from the 1980s under the name "Nana-Benz" ("The Mothers with the Benz"). As traders of printed textiles, they were so successful that they made their country a center of textile trade in West Africa. With the purchase of luxury vehicles, especially the Mercedes-Benz brand, they symbolized the economic, social, and political status they had achieved through this success. They are considered the first millionaires on the African continent. To this day, the vehicles are inherited by mothers to their daughters. The band plays music that is perfect for the dance floor and combines voodoo tradition with soul. They are five, like the fingers of a hand. A hand ready to make a fist and strike powerfully – or gently caress the earth with groove and grace. Nana Benz du Togo creates an organic sound, permeated by sub-basses and layered with complex polyrhythms. This creates a hypnotic foundation for the voices of three captivating electro-soul preachers. Feminist and ecological themes, sung in harmony with the scales of Togolese voodoo tradition, remain at the heart of the band's message. Equipped with nothing but their voices and a vintage Korg keyboard, this powerful ensemble conjures a sound that is both raw and transcendent. Their live performances are almost spiritual – a mixture of ancestral energy and modern fire, which has already entranced thousands on European stages.
