Murtenlauf

Description

In 1476, the Swiss Confederates achieved a brilliant victory over Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy at Murten. To commemorate this event, thousands of athletes participate annually in the famous Murtenlauf in autumn. The race recalls the legend of the messenger who ran from Murten to Freiburg with a linden branch in hand to announce the victory. The race covers a distance of 17.170 km in hilly terrain. Both national and international elite athletes as well as amateur runners can participate. A shortened course is offered for joggers and walkers. The Mini Murtenlauf for children aged 4 and above takes place on Saturday afternoon. Depending on age group, children run one to five laps in the city center of Freiburg.
