Description

Companion, subject of study, symbol, mirror or fantasy, the animal has never left the field of photographers since the invention of the medium. Animal Model dives into two centuries of images to reveal how photography has shaped our view of animals — and deeply influenced our way of loving, exploiting, or defending them.
From microphotographs by Auguste Bertsch in the 19th century to snapshots by Martin Parr and Elliott Erwitt revealing the complicity between humans and animals, from collages by Peter Beard blending personal narrative and ecological concerns to delicate observations by Rinko Kawauchi, from the quest for harmony by Simona Kossak to the staging by William Wegman: the exhibition traverses the work of great photographers who have shaped our sensitivity to the living. It also embraces the most inventive contemporary approaches — from the strange creatures of Augustin Rebetez and Robin Lopvet to the poetic universes of Vasantha Yogananthan, passing through daring experiments circulating on social networks.
By highlighting the massive presence of animals in the collective imagination, Animal Model invites us to cross boundaries: between human and animal, between gaze and image — and perhaps, between what we see and what we choose to see.
