Technological advancements and the availability of energy resources are profoundly transforming the way we move. Since the late 19th century, the world has experienced unprecedented acceleration. Bicycles allow a large part of the population to experience speeds and autonomy previously unknown. In the 20th century, the desire for greater individual mobility also fueled the rise of the automobile. As a raw material and energy source, oil paved the way for a true revolution in mobility. However, this history of transportation is also a story of crises, resistance, and the search for alternatives. Biel is a striking example. Whether by bicycle, the Spirit of Biel/Bienne, the Smart, or braking, moving from the bastion of cycling to General Motors, to protests against the highway project of the western axis, the city has taken a winding path.
