Description

The rising conductor, Rossini expert, and specialist in historical performance practice Jakob Lehmann makes his debut with the Musikkollegium. After two subscription concerts, he can now be experienced on Friday evening with a program entirely dedicated to the Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius. The first piece of the evening, the “Cassazione,” was composed by him in 1904 as a filler for a composition concert. The title refers to the cassation, a genre similar to the serenade, which was popular in the second half of the 18th century. Sibelius revised the piece several times but remained dissatisfied – he noted laconicly in 1905 “Bör omarbetas” (“should be revised”). Unpublished during his lifetime, the “Cassazione” fell into oblivion and is still one of the less frequently performed works of the Finn. Quite different is his fifth symphony: with its memorable and effective final melody, which Sibelius is said to have been inspired by the flight of swans, it is one of his most popular orchestral works. Speaking of swans: a very special specimen is featured in “The Swan of Tuonela,” namely the mystical swan from the Finnish national epic Kalevala, which swims around the island of the dead Tuonela. Sibelius originally conceived the piece as an overture to an opera in Wagner’s style. Although the opera never materialized, he assembled the Lemminkäinen Suite from the themes he had already composed for it, named after the womanizer from Kalevala.
