Lightness is the heaviest – violin, Styrian accordion, guitar, and tuba – four virtuoso musicians weave a dynamic, chamber-music-like fabric that blooms in an elegance and lightness you wouldn't expect in connection with folk music. In improvisations, jazz shines through; in the flawless interplay, classical training; and in the manifold echoes, the broad horizon of four cosmopolitans who are simultaneously rooted in their homeland. This music resists simple categorization and creates a delightful auditory confusion. Maxjoseph's music is not just a synthesis of E- and U-music, old and new, folk and classical – it is an invitation to a dialogue where boundaries blur, yet one remains grounded, rooted in the homeland. "Lagom" is the name of Maxjoseph's new album and program – music that delicately balances tradition and present. Inspired by the Swedish term for just the right measure, it creates a distinctive sound between holding on and letting go: light-footed, elegant, and full of character. Jazz openness, classical precision, and a broad musical horizon combine with deep roots in the homeland to form a contemporary folk music beyond all categories.
