reads from her new novel "Nach der Sonne schauen" No one is an island. Nevertheless, installation artist Iona Bartschok, who — by the way — is named after the cemetery island of Scottish kings, retreats into solitude. In this case, solitude means an old industrial hall in the former lignite mining region around Leipzig, fitting for her new art project about the landscape in five thousand years. It will probably be overgrown by primeval forest or destroyed by climate change, but in any case, it will be uninhabited. The occasion for her retreat is an incident at an art exhibition: Herto Straus, a well-known artist, defaces Iona's installation with paint and the word "Bullshit." In the seemingly bleak lignite landscape, initially only in the company of the AI companion dog Robyn, Iona contemplates the meaning of art and solidarity in the cultural sector. With "Nach der Sonne schauen" (Klett-Cotta), Martina Hefter has created a novel that is both precise and insightful about how wanton destruction shapes nature and culture (industry) alike. Nevertheless, the novel is never hopeless: eventually, the real dog Bella appears, and Nova, the rebellious niece of the landlord, fills the vague idea of a utopia with life.
