A conversation with the renowned Slovak intellectual about life's pleasures and struggles during the difficult times of the Anthropocene. The discussion will primarily focus on the works of Martin M. Šimečka, especially 'Physical Education: Reflections of a Runner, Swimmer, Tennis Player, and Equestrian on Movement, Body, and Mind' and 'Exceptional Times: How to Live Well in Difficult Times.' The conversation will be facilitated by Michal Bartoš. Martin M. Šimečka is a Slovak writer and journalist of Czech origin, recipient of the Jiří Orten Award in 1988. He grew up in the family of philosopher and dissident Milan Šimečka, held various jobs (caretaker, salesman, lifeguard, stoker, etc.) until 1989, and published mainly in samizdat. In November 1989, he was a member of the leadership of the Public Against Violence movement, and in 1990, he founded the Archa publishing house, where he served as editor-in-chief until 1997, when he became the editor-in-chief of the weekly Domino fórum. Later, he was the editor-in-chief of the daily SME, editor-in-chief and member of the editorial board of the Czech weekly Respekt, and since November 2016, he has been a commentator for Denník N. He is the author of the novel 'Genie,' which was published in the USA and France. In the book 'Light Signs,' he comments on the letters his father sent from prison to his family. In Czech, he has also published a book of interviews by Kirill Ščeblykin and Filip Zajíček titled 'We Are Like Them: An Interview with Martin M. Šimečka about Liberals, Hypocrites, and Fascists.'
