Martin Kohlstedt is one of the outstanding composers, pianists, and producers of Modern Classical, Instrumental Music, and Electronica. His music receives international recognition, accompanied by concert tours around the world.
Both live and on his recordings, Martin Kohlstedt sets standards for how cutting-edge Electronica can combine with analog and acoustic elements from classical piano, ambient, field recordings, and score design. Kohlstedt manages to find an intuitive common form for influences from such different worlds and to create a lively body from it – as a spectacular festival show, an introspective piano concert, a multidimensional film soundtrack, or an immersive album experience.
He describes his way of working as modular composition. The pieces are constantly in motion and do not follow a fixed form even in concert. Improvisation is an essential part of his creative process, as is the courage to fail, to search, and to interact with context, space, and people.
Martin Kohlstedt has already collaborated with renowned partners such as the GewandhausChor Leipzig, artists like Ben Böhmer, Douglas Dare, Sudan Archives, and Henrik Schwarz, as well as with labels like Warner Classics. Martin Kohlstedt performs concerts in over 30 countries, including on the most renowned stages and festivals across Europe. Besides his own compositions, Kohlstedt writes soundtracks for films, theater pieces, podcasts, and radio plays. With the Edition Kohlstedt, he runs his own label and is committed to reforestation projects as part of his responsibility as an artist. Martin Kohlstedt lives and works in Weimar.
