Juraplatz / Place du Jura, 2502 Biel/Bienne Mantos Seeing Hips Where There Are Mountains The project emerges from an unsettled position of being in between cultures, geographies, and ways of seeing. It inhabits the condition of being mobile and rooted, carrying multiple places and perspectives. Juraplatz offers an architecture of transit. The bus stop as a space of suspension and passage, where bodies, routes, and temporalities briefly converge. What might appear as a non-place becomes a site where different positions of looking can appear side to side. References drawn from Indigenous Amazonian and Andean contexts are brought together within this contemporary space. Rather than being treated as a unified or timeless visual language, they appear as eclectic fragments rooted in multiple traditions and brought into relation with one another. The work holds these tensions in view: images become present through materials and unexpected juxtapositions. In the main window, a delicate veil of visionary imagery is projected onto a discarded aspirin blister pack. A contemporary object associated with pharmaceutical intervention becomes a fragile surface for images connected to Indigenous cosmologies and forms of healing. The juxtaposition does not seek to establish a simple opposition between “modern” and “ancestral” knowledge. Instead, it opens a more complex field in which different understandings and perceptions can coexist, while acknowledging the unequal histories through which such knowledges have been represented and consumed. In the “old pissoir,” references to textile traditions enter into dialogue with the complex relief of the Andes, resonating with the visionary imagery unfolding in the main window. To look is also to move between positions, to recognize the limits of one’s own perspective, and to remain attentive to the histories embedded in the images and forms one encounters. The project inhabits this unstable territory of entering cultures that use different methods of widen their perception, passing through these rituals can be the opening to see Seeing Hips Where There Are Mountains, a shifting gaze in which perception becomes a form of travel.
