Description

What drove Hugo von Tschudi (1851-1911) to contradict the art understanding of the German Emperor? He took down German history painting and hung up art by French Impressionists. Of all places, in the collection of the National Gallery Berlin!
The illustrated reading portrays the Vienna-Swiss Tschudi as a fascinating personality between civil service responsibility and uncompromising commitment to artistic freedom.
The texts come from partly unpublished letters from family members as well as from Cosima Wagner, widow of the composer and significant cultural manager of the 19th century. They are complemented by voices of art historians and artists from Tschudi's environment.
Together with music by contemporaries and image projections of some works by Rembrandt, Francisco de Goya, Caspar David Friedrich, Édouard Manet, Paul Cézanne, Max Liebermann, and Vincent van Gogh, a vivid picture of the legendary museum director with St. Gallen and Glarus roots emerges.
Speakers: Helmut Vogel has lived in Zurich since 1983; the reason was an engagement at the Theater am Neumarkt under the direction of Peter Schweiger. Since the 1990s, he has worked as a freelance actor with forays into directing, mostly musical productions mainly in the German-speaking Switzerland and Austria. Laura Lienhard (born 1983, Schaffhausen) studied German philology and cultural anthropology at the University of Basel and theater at the École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris.
