The film is regarded as an important precursor to the New Queer Cinema movement of the early 1990s. Based on a story by Walt Curtis, it tells a tale of longing, intimacy, and rejection: Johnny and Pepper, two young Mexican migrants, spend the winter in Portland, Oregon. There they meet Walt, a shop assistant in a small shop. A bond of closeness, desire, and interdependence develops between them – Van Sant leaves the contradictions to speak for themselves. Shot on 16 mm film in grainy black and white on a shoestring budget, Van Sant imbues the night, the bodies, and the streets of Portland with a sensual intensity, rendered with great tenderness.
