Is madness a means to escape reality or – on the contrary – a means to confront it? With his monodrama «Eight Songs for a Mad King» (1969), Peter Maxwell Davies created a sophisticated character study of the mad British King George III, based on the monarch's original texts. Enchanting cantilenas and cacophonies depict the picture of emotional and mental disintegration – they provoke and simultaneously reveal an astonishing clairvoyance. The world premiere by the renowned British composer Bushra El-Turk contrasts this historical figure for the first time with one of the most contradictory mythological female figures. The libretto «My Name is the Curse» by the award-winning Swiss author Ariane Koch gives Medea a new voice. In the tension between self-empowerment and madness, power and arbitrariness, love and hate, we experience a world in fractures; it may also bring forth truths that deeply move us.
