Description
Saint Francis of Assisi died on October 3, 1226. Eight hundred years to the day after his passing, this lecture traces the formation of his image. In the decades following his death, the Poverello became one of the most depicted subjects in Italian painting: from early frontal, almost iconic effigies, to painted narratives by Giotto in Assisi and Santa Croce, an image of devotion becomes history.
