Their faces have long since disappeared from everyday life in Bönigen and Ronco sopra Ascona. Johan Wilhelm “Jan” Schutter died in 1956, and Anna Luigia “Anneli” Boller—later Fankhauser-Boller and Schutter-Boller—died in 1975. While hardly anyone in Bönigen remembers “Jan” Schutter, he is still very much present in Ronco sopra Ascona. Recently, part of his artistic legacy has been moved there and is currently being cataloged. Anna Schutter-Boller lives on in the memories of her many students, whom she taught at the elementary school in Bönigen from 1914 until her retirement in 1955. “Anneli” and “Jan” literally “come to life” when we delve into their written legacy. Family documents, essay notebooks, notes—including those by and about other people—as well as diaries and, above all, over 11,000 letters provide a fascinating insight into family life, intellectual life, the arts, and society from the 1920s to the 1950s.
