Description

In this concert, four works meet that illuminate the relationship between solo voice and ensemble in very different ways. Edward Elgar's Introduction and Allegro puts the string apparatus under tension from the start. The work lives from the alternation between tutti and smaller groups, from the emergence of individual lines and from the reuniting in the overall sound. Elgar takes up the idea of the Concerto grosso and creates music that develops energy from within the ensemble. With the piano concerto “Hill Stanzas” by the British composer Sally Beamish, a contemporary work moves into the center. Beamish wrote it for Ronald Brautigam. The music does not follow a pure virtuoso logic but unfolds its own dramaturgy from sound, atmosphere, and movement. The piano is at the center but always remains connected to the orchestra as part of a larger musical context. Johannes van Bree's Allegro for four string quartets directs the focus once again to the strings. The piece lives from the interplay of small units, the interlocking of voices, and a mobility that arises entirely from the chamber music setup. The sound remains transparent and gains its tension precisely from this. Finally, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major KV 271, the so-called Jeunehomme Concerto, follows. Mozart already breaks the expectations of his time early on here. The piano appears with unusual decisiveness, the exchange with the orchestra begins immediately, and from this dialogue, the whole work gains its special freshness. Ronald Brautigam appears in this program not only as a soloist but as a central figure of an evening that repeatedly makes the relationship between individual and collective, between present and past, audibly new.
