Description

In a Swiss village on the border, the innkeeper Arnold runs a guesthouse. Colorful birds and gloomy figures cross the border, some also come at night and cross-country. One day, a stranger approaches on horseback through the snow. Her name is Betty. Arnold marries her and has eight children with her. Life takes its course until the eldest daughter Clara falls in love with a smuggler named Hermann in 1933. He turns the uniformed officers on both sides of the border against him.
