Description
Alain Claude Sulzer – F. comme frères
Moderation: Claude Terrin Two boys grow up side by side in 1960s Germany, inseparable, almost like brothers. But their paths eventually diverge. Frank goes to New York to live his homosexuality freely and become a painter, while his friend chooses a more conventional existence. When Frank returns, ill with AIDS, he bequeaths his paintings to him – which remain forgotten for decades. Thirty years later, the works mysteriously reappear in Berlin, and their creator is suddenly celebrated as a major artist. For the narrator, this begins a return to a friendship marked by closeness and distance, silences, small cowardices, and missed opportunities. With a sober and elegant writing style, Alain Claude Sulzer explores in F. comme frères what time does to friendship and our memories – and subtly questions artistic recognition and what we sometimes only understand in hindsight. Alain Claude Sulzer, born in 1953 in Riehen near Basel, is one of the great contemporary Swiss writers. He is the author of numerous novels translated into several languages, and he notably received the Prix Médicis étranger in 2008 for Un garçon parfait.
