Description
At the beginning of the 18th century, the monkey Rotpeter is captured. To escape the agonizing confinement of his cage, he sees only one way out: to become a human. In a drunken stupor, he learns to speak, and the baroque dance art to the music of Lully, Couperin, and Marais makes him socially acceptable. His rise takes him to the court of Louis XIV. In the splendor of Versailles, the Sun King becomes his shining role model. Just as Louis XIV denies his human nature to be fully king, Rotpeter denies his animal nature to be fully human. In doing so, he unwittingly witnesses a declining era.
