Description

What happens in the kingdom of Bérenger I.? The walls show cracks, the conquered territories sink into large holes. The king does not have long to live: The king is dying... But Béranger is a man who is wholeheartedly attached to life and the world he has built around him. He does not want to hear the truth about his impending death. He resists, fights, sometimes carefree, sometimes tyrannical, sometimes in love, sometimes unjust, sometimes generous, sometimes fearful, sometimes pleasure-seeking, sometimes selfish. Torn between his two wives, he comes to terms with his impending death. "The King is Dying" occupies a central place in Ionesco's work. While his early plays explore the absurdity of language and communication, this play focuses on the absurdity of human existence in the face of death. It marks a development towards more existential and universal themes.
