The film – based on a screenplay by John Berger and Alain Tanner – takes place in a village called "Le Milieu du monde" because of a river that divides into two: on one side, the water flows into the Orbe, then the Rhine and the North Sea, and on the other, into the Venoge, then the Rhône and the Mediterranean Sea. Waters that split just like this love between personalities of opposing class and character. "The narrative progresses in fits and starts. Nothing is said, everything is suggested through a series of notes, behaviors (...) almost every scene is a shot, a step in the relationship between the two characters.
