Description
After Whitewashing, which was hosted last season at the Comédie, director, writer, and performer Rébecca Chaillon imagines this new creation in the form of a tale, working fiction and narration as powerful tools that marginalized people can use to survive humiliation, fear, and forced relegation. Inspired by the territory where she lives and works – Seine-Saint-Denis, the poorest department in France, immediately near the capital – as well as by her travels to Martinique and New Orleans, Rébecca Chaillon composes in La Parabole du Seum with the inventiveness of margins and their ways of creating their own mythologies and rituals to survive the imperative and violence of the norm. With this 'astrological and astronomical tale' – which borrows its title by diverting it from La Parabole du Semeur, a masterpiece of 20th-century science fiction written by the American black author Octavia E. Butler – Rébecca Chaillon makes the stage a utopian space where new myths can be built, new rituals invented, where ostracized communities, discriminated against because they are Black, fat, queer, trans, can gather and imagine again the possibility of a future.
