Description
Although caricature has always existed, it was during the Revolution and the Empire that it was first widely used as a tool of political propaganda, and it was under Louis-Philippe that it became an art in its own right, emancipating itself from the rules of ideal beauty. Taking advantage of new reproduction techniques and the rise of the press, Daumier established it as another 'flower of evil,' which flourished for half a century before falling back into satire, most often without aesthetic ambition. But its violence is no less felt, as our sensitivity to images is now more acute than to words.
