Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica based on four scenes from Henri Murgers' »Scènes de la vie de bohème«. Music by Giacomo Puccini. In the cold Paris winter air, a story unfolds about love, friendship, and the struggle between youthful dreams of the future and a dishearteningly empty pantry. Rodolfo meets his neighbor Mimì surrounded by a circle of young artists who enjoy life despite poverty; they love, part, and reconcile — just like Musetta and Marcello. But like the fleeting glow of a winter evening by the fireplace, their shared future fades: Mimì is incurably ill. The nostalgic tone of the libretto was transformed by the composer into a often lush and indulgent score, with lyrical duets and ensembles. He masterfully captures different social milieus and the exuberance of youthful love with fine orchestral coloring. The work is full of world-famous melodies like Rodolfo's »Che gelida manina« or Mimì's »Mi chiamano Mimì«. Musetta's waltz bursts with coquettish joy of life.
