In the cold Paris winter air, a story about love, friendship, and the struggle between youthful dreams and a disappointingly empty pantry unfolds. Rodolfo meets his neighbor Mimì. Surrounded by a circle of young artists who enjoy life despite poverty, the two love, part, and reconcile – just like the other two main characters, Musetta and Marcello. But like the fleeting glow of a winter evening by the fireplace, their shared future also fades: Mimì is incurably ill... Puccini set the nostalgic tone of the libretto into a often lush and indulgent score full of world-famous melodies like Rodolfo's "Che gelida manina" or Mimì's "Mi chiamano Mimì." Critics saw Puccini as the legitimate successor to Giuseppe Verdi after the success of "La Bohème."
