Description
KURGAST is one of the most successful in-house productions of the Kurtheater: Due to unbroken demand, Hermann Hesse's perennial favorite with the incomparable Andreas Storm is now running in its fifth season!
Hesse's KURGAST is among the most amusing texts of the Nobel Prize-winning author. The records of a spa stay in Baden – Hesse first stayed at Verenahof in 1923 and returned repeatedly to our spa town for treatments over the years – are "behind a half-joking facade my most personal and serious book," Hesse explained immediately after finishing the manuscript. The 1925 published story ironically depicts the course of his stay in Baden, during which the poet, after initially distancing himself from the other "sciatic patients," falls into an apathetic state that he tries to break through with humor. His despair about the surroundings increases, among other things, due to the nightly disturbances from his roommate, the "Dutchman": The hatred against "his laughter, his good mood, the energy of his movements" makes the poet aware of his own inability and his conflict with the world.
○"The first-person narrator (...) describes himself as 'mannered-neurotic,' and Andreas Storm portrays him with very fine mimicry and gestures. Nevertheless, you grow very fond of him in this brief hour – despite his bad moods and his scoldings." Aargauer Zeitung WITH Andreas Storm DIRECTOR Johanna Böckli SET DESIGN Corinne L.
