Description
Mozart had to cancel and start over his first concert in Vienna. Why, Mozart himself reports: because at the beginning of the concert "the applause never ended." Which piano concerto he exactly played on that April evening in 1781 cannot be said with certainty. But it was almost certainly the E-flat major concerto KV 271, the newest and most spectacular of his concertos. We can still understand the effect it must have had: there was the surprisingly early appearance of the solo piano right at the beginning. Or the wonderfully operatic Andantino. Or the enormously virtuosic finale. To ignite this fireworks of effects, it takes someone to fill Mozart's role: Kristian Bezuidenhout is the perfect pianist for this, showing sensitivity and joy of music on both historical and modern instruments.
A good century after Mozart, another young, highly talented musician traveled to a metropolis: George Enescu, Romanian violinist, pianist, and composer with the dream destination Paris. And the concentration of astonishing skill and huge self-confidence that Mozart's piano concerto so clearly shows is not at all weaker to be felt in Enescu. His string octet from 1900 is the stunning proof: the eight voices barely suffice to capture the abundance of his ideas and demonstrate his polyphonic weaving art. This golden-threaded sound band spans almost forty minutes. Anyone who does not know the piece must have heard it at least once in their life.
