Cribs from Around the World in the Würth Collection

They are an integral part of the Christian Christmas celebration, not only in Europe but worldwide – Christmas cribs. Whether made of wood, stone, or clay, life-sized or so small that they fit into a matchbox, Christmas cribs come in all imaginable shapes and materials from Australia to South America. Each crib reflects the cultural traditions, craftsmanship techniques, and artistic expressions of its region of origin. The crib collection of the Würth Collection dates back to the private collection of Edwin and Wilma Buchholz, which was acquired in 2002. It includes 700 cribs from more than 130 countries across five continents, collected over 50 years. From the beginning, their focus was on international diversity. The collection includes, among others, African clay cribs, brightly painted wooden figures from South America, or elaborately decorated Szopki from Poland. The exhibition at the Würth Forum Rorschach presents a selection from this internationally significant crib collection and offers insights into different materials, techniques, and traditions through which the Christmas story is told around the globe.
