"Visual Mending," the visible patching of clothing and textiles, has become popular in the context of sustainability. But how can elaborate mending work be best avoided? The fashion of the 19th and early 20th centuries offers solutions: modular clothing systems with detachable collars, cuffs, bands, and pockets were exchanged as needed and simultaneously provided fashionable variety. Hygiene also played a role: clothing modules exposed to sweat and dirt could be washed frequently and at high temperatures. Curator Nora Lardon presents examples from the textile collection of Museum.BL and introduces sophisticated solutions for connections and pattern constructions of historical garments. We learn about the purpose of the "Bäseliband" and which industries—from production to sales to care—were connected with these modular clothing systems.
