Ephemeral Tangibility
“Early in my career as a composer, I began to think about the connection between body and music, triggered by a text by Roland Barthes about Robert Schumann. Since then, this connection has been part of my thinking about music and my analysis of compositions. Even though this connection is blurred and unclear, it has always been a constant for me to see a composition as a body connected to my own body. Certainly, thinking about this is not part of composing, but rather something that unfolds in the background. It is not tangible like a sound that can be clearly notated, but rather something fluid, alongside and between the sounds. It feels as if the body of the composition unfolds in these interspaces. Or in the way the sounds are assembled or separated from each other. In my case, it may seem particularly paradoxical to speak of a body of composition, as my music is often light, calm, and ephemeral. But this feeling of the compositional body is not a result of many or few tones. It is a feeling that arises from a totality, a totality of sound, silence, and duration.
