Description

Named after the legendary neighborhood in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the birthplace of Calypso, Kobo Town is described as "a heady mix of upbeat Calypso wit, dancehall reggae and brass-heavy horns" (Guardian) and as "a unique, transnational composition of rhythm, poetry, and activist journalism" (Exclaim!). Since their formation in 2005, the group has captivated audiences worldwide with their distinctive sound inspired by Calypso and Ska. The band's frontman is Drew Gonsalves, who moved from Trinidad to Canada as a teenager and rediscovered the joy of old Calypso, Ska, and Roots Reggae through old records found in thrift store bins. As a songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, his songs have been covered by many other artists, including Carlos Santana, Manu Chao, and Calypso Rose. Both melancholic and joyful, deeply poetic and irresistibly danceable – the songs of Kobo Town are rooted in the rich tradition of Caribbean musical storytelling and are delivered with an unbridled energy that has thrilled audiences from Montreal to Malaysia and from Havana to Berlin. The group has released three albums to date: their debut album "Independence", the chart-topping "Jumbie in the Jukebox", and the Juno Award-winning "Where The Galleon Sank". Their fourth album "Carnival of the Ghosts" was released in spring 2022. They are once again collaborating with the Montreal-based label Stonetree Records and Ivan Duran, the unconventional producer who has rediscovered, reinterpreted, and made accessible the lost sounds of the Caribbean.
