Different national traditions, aesthetic ideals, and sound languages enter into a lively dialogue – connected by the intimate form of chamber music. Camille Saint-Saëns opens the evening with French elegance, brilliant virtuosity, and a fine sense of instrumental timbres. His second piano trio as well as the Introduction and Rondo capriccioso show music full of brilliance, rhythmic energy, and transparent textures, in which violin and piano engage in sparkling exchange. With Bohuslav Martinů, the program continues to Central Europe. The variations on a Slovak theme combine folkloric roots with modern harmony and rhythmic precision. The work lives from contrasting colors and a clear, pointed tonal language, in which the cello takes on a particularly expressive role. The finale is Johannes Brahms’ first piano trio op. 8 – a work of great emotional depth and symphonic breadth. Here the three instruments merge into a dense, warm sound body that impressively embodies the romantic idea of timbre as an expression of inner movement.
